Vicki Blevins and the staff at Kentucky Pink Connection ensure women are navigated properly through the health care system and if uninsured, utilize the services of the Kentucky Women's Cancer Screening program. If the patient has a diagnosis, this enables them to qualify for financial coverage for their treatment. Often women are unaware of this program and end up not having the resources to pay for treatment, leaving them financially devastated, or worse, deciding not to seek treatment at all. Navigating women to overcome whatever barrier or obstacle they face to getting well is the underlying mission of the Kentucky Pink Connection.
For many women breast cancer is apt to result in a major disruption of body image,
depression, fears of rejection and deep-seated concerns about sexual identity and behavior.
Kentucky Pink Connection is dedicated to alleviating stress, enhance coping abilities, and improving patients' physical and emotional recovery.
Kentucky Pink Connection staff work to stay with the patient throughout their stated need. The patient decides when the case is closed, not Kentucky Pink Connection.
Although resources do exist to help women, they are disjointed and it is often too confusing for a person unfamiliar with the gamete of community partners to negotiate and find relief. Often women are too embarrassed or afraid to reach out for the help they need.
Kentucky Pink Connection was established in April 2008 by Vicki Blevins, the Executive Director. Vicki previously owned a specialty boutique for mastectomy and prosthetic devices for women who had undergone breast cancer surgery.
Many women are unaware of the KY Woman's Cancer Screening Program (the state's CDC funded BCCEDP program) that provides low cost screening through the health department. They fear if cancer is detected there will be no way to afford treatment. Thankfully, funds for treatment are now provided for this population through House Bill 98. Treatment funds are available IF they are navigated through the proper administrative procedures. KPC works to promote the screening available to high risk audiences through a multitude of public venues and through its many community partners. KPC navigates this vulnerable population through the process while aiming to assist those already diagnosed with whatever barriers they face. KPC works diligently to encourage all healthcare providers to educate staff and office personnel about the most ethical steps that must be taken in order to provide the best financial outcomes for patients with NO INSURANCE.
According to the Kentucky Data Center, 30% of Kentuckians have no insurance. Another 18% are on Medicaid. (Kaiser Family-State healthfacts.org) This means that approximately, 958 women diagnosed in 2012 year will have no insurance and will need the services of the Kentucky Pink Connection. According to a recent study, published in June of 2008 in Preventative Medicine, even women who are insured, are not receiving mammograms a frequently as they did in the past, so broad promotion of the Kentucky Pink Connection through local media outlets and participating health plans and partners is also a continued process. Kentucky Pink Connection has helped many women with insurance overcome high deductibles or other limitations placed on them by their insurance company. KCP works to negotiate lower rates or appeal decisions if financial hardship becomes a barrier to treatment.
Overall mission statement is simple: to provide a "link to hope" provide assistance to
eliminate whatever barrier exists between obtaining screening or treatment.
Kentucky Pink Connection has been organized with four main goals in mind:
(1) To provide breast cancer patients with support services and products in a personal and dignified way which will enable them to adapt functionally, psychologically, and emotionally to their disease
(2) Increase breast health awareness and education among the public to encourage early detection
(3) Establish a referral network with health professionals and organizations that connect patients to existing services and ensure women who are underinsured or uninsured are navigated properly to take advantage of existing programs that fund screening and treatment
(4) Provide a 'safety net' when all other resources have been exhausted
