How to Get a Public Adjuster License?

How to Get a Public Adjuster License

In order to work as a public adjuster, you must first obtain a public adjuster license in the state where you will be working. Each state regulates insurance; thus, you will need to visit the state's department of insurance to find out exactly what's required to get a public adjuster license.

For example, if you plan on working in Texas, you'll need to go to the Texas Department of Insurance website and click on Licensing followed by Agent/Adjuster. From there, you can learn more about the public adjuster license process.

In general, you will need to pass a written licensing exam, pay a fee, submit fingerprints, post a bond, and apply for a license. The written exam will test your knowledge of relevant insurance topics such as: standard fire policies, personal lines coverage, commercial lines coverage, additional coverages and exclusions, insurance terminology, and state-specific statutes and rules pertaining to public adjusters. These public adjuster license exams are often administered through a third party testing center such as Pearson VUE.

After passing the licensing exam, you will then need to pass a criminal background check and pay any licensing application fees. Most states will require some form of financial responsibility such as a surety bond or professional liability policy.

Once you've obtained your public adjuster license, you will need to keep it current by attending continuing education classes. Each insurance department has its own continuing education requirements for public adjusters.

It's important to note that not all people interested in becoming public adjusters qualify for a public adjuster license. For example, most states require their licensed public adjusters to be U.S. citizens over age 18. In addition, if you've been convicted of a felony in the past ten years, you may not qualify.
