Bill Henderson was disagnosed with cancer in his lymph nodes. He had surgery on his neck, which included removing part of his tongue. By the end of his treatment, he complete 30 rounds of radiation treatment and lost 50lbs.
During his recovery, muscle wasting set in and Bill suffered from tremendious fatigue. He couldn't even get out his recliner without help. He described trying to go to church on Sunday and needing a full day to recover.
Six months into his recovery, Cigna vocational rehabilitation counselor, Betty Sims, contacted Bill to see how she could help.
"Betty was the first person to offer support in a meaningful way," Bill recalled.
She began by referring him into physical and speech therapy, which helped. But he still didn't feel like he was totally back.
Not long after Bill completed speech therapy, Cigna began referring long term disability customers into a new Achilles Cigna customer referral program. Betty brought the opportunity to Bill and he became one of the first volunteers.
With the Achilles Cigna Customer Referral Program, Bill went from having difficulty getting out his chair to walking the five mile Achilles International Hope & Possibility Race in New York. In another month, he celebrated his first anniversary for being cancer free.
"I believe everything happens for a reason," Bill says. "Some people say 'why me?' when something like this happens. I said 'Why not me?' Cancer made me a better person. Before I went into a career in sales, I was in the ministry. I see this point in my life as an opportunity to return to the ministry to help people who are sick."
