Health Insurance Indemnity and Fixed Benefit Policies

There are some fundamental differences between indemnity covers and fixed benefit covers.

1. In an indemnity cover, the amount of compensation is limited to the amount of expense incurred. For instance, if you have taken two indemnity policies one for a cover of 1.5 Lakhs and another for a cover of 2.5 Lakhs (from two different companies), and your actual hospitalization costs are 1 Lakh, the total compensation paid out to you will be exactly 1 Lakh (which will be shared by the two companies). On the other hand, in case of a fixed benefit policy, the payout is not connected to the expenses -- if you have multiple policies, you will get the promised payouts from each of the policies.

2. In a traditional indemnity plan, premium is normally revised every year (some plans offer a fixed premium of up to 3 years). It generally increases with age notwithstanding no-claim bonuses, if any. However in a fixed benefit plan, premium is fixed for the term of the policy say 10-15 years.

3. In a traditional indemnity policy, one is expected to submit all original bills to the Insurer to process a claim. However, for a fixed benefit plan, only the occurrence of the disease needs to be proven irrespective of the actual expenses incurred. For instance, just a diagnostic report for a brain stroke is enough to make the claim.

4. Extent of coverage: A typical traditional indemnity plan is comprehensive and covers all expenses linked to hospitalization. However, a fixed benefit plan specifies the list of illnesses for which it provides a benefit.

So, when should one purchase a fixed benefit plans? Ideally these plans should be bought when:

a) You are already covered by your employer but the health cover is limited to less than Rs 4 lakhs or

b) You have a Mediclaim that has a low cover less than Rs 4 lakhs or

c) Your health insurance (either through Employer or existing Mediclaim policy) has sum assured less than your ideal sum assured (refer: Estimate your Health Cover Needs)

In general we recommend that everyone must first purchase Mediclaim. Preferably a plan with a family floater and then purchase a fixed benefit cover to supplement the core insurance. We feel this keeps your premiums in check and also provides adequate health insurance to your family and you.
